Duck and Southern Shores 

Named for the numbers of waterfowl that once flocked here during migratory season, the recently-incorporated Town of Duck is now considered one of the most popular beach destinations in the country. In 2006, The Discovery Channel’s Travel Staff once again named Duck as one of the top ten beaches for families. The beach is the main attraction and Duck's wide swaths of sand bring visitors back year after year. Oceanside, respectable surf is ideal for boogie boarding, body surfing and swimming, while the sound offers up a perfect playground for nature lovers and sports enthusiasts who require calmer waters. Quaint boutiques, fine dining and a paved bike / walking path throughout Duck contribute to its village-like atmosphere. At the north end of town, the Army Research Pier is a fascinating attraction worthy of an afternoon tour with the family.  

Located between Kitty Hawk and Duck is the Town of Southern Shores. Stretching from the oceanfront to the soundfront, Southern Shores offers a variety of settings and activities for its many year round residents and vacationing guests. Along with its pristine beaches, a series of navigable canals winds through the area. Pack a lunch and hike or bike through the beautiful area to find the perfect spot for a picnic. There is more than just trails that wind through the scenic forestry of the beach; Southern Shores also has a private country club for the golf enthusiasts, where the public is allowed to play. These activities, unlike common "beach attractions" brings in a population of nearly 10,000 people throughout the summer season.
